My TOP 10 SUPERFOODS - Camu Camu

January 8, 2018

I'm not sure how many of you already know of Camu Camu.

Myself as well recently discovered this special food, which immediately entered in my top 10 superfoods to eat daily thanks to its incredible nutritional content.

Let’s learn a little more about this next superfood superstar!

Camu Camu is nothing but a little tree growing in the Amazon rainforest areas of Peru and Brazil, which fruit is a small, cherry-like drupe, with the greatest Vitamin C content.

These fruits have actually more vitamin C than any other food source on the planet (really!), from 30 to 60 times more Vitamin C per serving than an orange, and 200 times more than a banana.

To be more specific: based on the Release 28 of the USDA National Nutrient Database for Standard Reference, 5g of camucamu (0.17 oz) contains 682mg of Vitamin C vs. 141g of Raw Florida Orange (5 ounce) which contains 63mg of it.

Pretty amazing, right?

Not only that, these berries are packed with antioxidants and contain essential amino acids for human health.

Let’s take a look at the benefits of our new best friend.

What is it Good for?

BOOST YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM. How many times have you had a fresh orange juice to strengthen your immune system? A lot. Especially when you have a cold.

Thanks to the high content of Vitamin C indeed, Oranges consumption is recommended to help your immune system stay healthy, allowing it to fight off colds and other infections.

Imagine having a fruit that can be up to 60 time stronger than an Orange in its immune system boosting action. It’s not science fiction, it is actually the case of these cherry-berry Camu Camu fruit, which with their 3575 % DV per 100g of Vitamin C can help enhance immunity and the healing power of your body against free radicals and pathogens.

ANTI – INFLAMMATORY.  Packed with Vitamin C, known for being a natural anti-inflammatory substance, and catechins, and flavonols, Camu Camu is a powerful superfood to help with inflammation, which is a major basepoint for many age-related diseases and issues such as Crohn’s, Alzheimer’s and arthritis.

COGNITIVE FUNCTION. The huge amount of Vitamin C found in these berries, works synergistically with the antioxidants compounds and some amino acids, in particular valine, also present in these fruits, to help improve cognitive abilities, preventing certain cognitive disorder such as dementia or Alzheimer’s disease.

CANCER. Although the evidence is thin and some studies don’t (want to) support that, high doses of Vitamin C, of which Camu Camu is packed, may results toxic for cancer cells, making it the best natural remedy to prevent the development or spread of certain types of cancers.

I don’t know about you, but as I am waiting for more accurate researches, I also started eating food high in Vitamin C.

How do I use it?

POWDER. Since the fruits tend to have a sour taste, and you can’t find them in common supermarkets, the only way you can add camu camu in your diet is by using the powder, which can be easily added to your smoothies, juices or food recipes as yogurt or oatmeal. One tsp of camu camu powder will give a tart cherry-flavour to your drink or food, boosting it in the Vitamin C content.
